At Newry Nursery & Juniors, everybody's favourite part of the day is meal time. And with the tasty meals our nursery cook dishes up, is it any wonder!!
We understand that giving children good nutrition is the best gift we can present them with! It’s a tangible gift that is evident in their eyes, their skin, their hearts and bones. Between being weaned off milk to the age of five, children are very active and grow extremely quickly so they need a diet that provides adequate amounts of calories and nutrients.
We provide home cooked, delicious meals and snacks for our children which include a wide range of foods and are prepared using fresh produce, by our own in-house cook. We offer milk or dairy foods in our meals during the day in accordance with existing guidance on food groups for children aged one to five years.
We ensure that mealtimes are a happy occasion, actively encouraging conversation and the tasting of new foods. The children sit down together in their group, then they are served their lunch either by a member of staff who sits with them or for older children, they learn to serve themselves. Eating together with other children encourages even the faddiest of toddlers to taste and enjoy foods they may not normally eat at home.
Parents are often really surprised to hear that their children have enjoyed houmous, chicken curry, or Tatw Pum Munud whilst at nursery, and we pride ourselves on developing the repertoire of food the children enjoy eating.
We offer a 3 week rolling menu, providing meals that are both healthy and tasty, and should your child have any other dietary requirements, we will happily cater for these. We encourage children to make healthy choices and to be independent at meal times. Drinking water is always available.
We comply with the Tiny Tums best practice for nurseries course, which sets out standards for quality food provision & food safety and we also hold the highest level of 5 for our hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency.
Since March 2012, Newry Nursery has joined the Healthy and Sustainable Pre-School Scheme. The Scheme is funded by Welsh Government and its aims are to promote the health and wellbeing of children in the early years.
We also provide baby jars of food but our cook is happy to liquidise our normal nursery food**
